What is public liability insurance?
Public liability insurance is something contractors should definitely consider as they're responsible for anyone who may be affected by their actions.
It'll provide cover for damage to third party property or injury to third party persons, as well as covering any legal fees that may arise as a consequence of any claims you have to defend.
Having public liability insurance is key for contractors - it'll protect you from the smallest incidents to the largest. It'll allow you to go about your work safe in the knowledge that you're covered should things go wrong.
As with employers' liability insurance, public liability insurance works on a 'losses occurring' basis - you'll be covered for claims pertaining to incidents that occurred during the period of insurance. This means that the period of time you were insured for remains covered after the expiration of your contractor insurance policy. Should a claim be bought against you after your policy has expired for an incident that occurred during the timeframe in which you held your policy with Kingsbridge you would still be covered.
Even if your contract doesn't stipulate that having public liability insurance in place is a requirement, it's still a very good idea for any contractors to hold it as it's an excellent way of mitigating any risks you might face.

Do you have any example claims?
An engineering contractor working on site accidental kicked over photographic equipment in their care and control. Their policy covered the costs of providing replacement equipment.
A self-employed IT technician was working at the site of a customer. They accidentally knocked over a cup of coffee and its contents poured down the back of a computer, damaging it beyond repair. The customer subsequently sued the IT technician for the cost of a new computer, and they were covered under the terms of their public liability insurance.
