Trust is a remarkable thing, especially in the world of contracting. If a client trusts you and the quality of your work then you build a reputation as a trustworthy professional and this can do wonders for your career and the opportunities to which you are exposed.

During the course of your career as a contractor, you may have considered joining a professional body and becoming accredited as a way of further cementing client trust in your work. You may have already done so as a result of certain, industry-specific legislation, or you may be considering doing so for the business benefits.

In this blog, we’re going to look at some of the ways that becoming an accredited contractor can add value to your business.

Extended business opportunities

If you’re accredited by an industry-specific professional body, this opens opportunities for you to access a wider network of contacts. Many businesses in the commercial sector (and government departments) will be informed of accredited contractors via a register.

This exposes you to a network of potential clients that you may never have been able to access before, which could prove invaluable for your business as a contractor.

Independent evaluation

Becoming an approved contractor with a professional body will mean that your work and working practices will be independently assessed. That way you can reassure your client base and yourself that how you work has been verified and the service that you provide is fully compliant with industry regulations.

Having undergone this process can also prove to be beneficial in the event of any legal action, proving that you have taken fully diligent steps to ensure that your working practices are safe and reliable.

Ongoing training

If you become a member of a professional body, you will more than likely have access to a program of ongoing training and professional development. Workplace training is something that contractors and independent professionals miss out on by not being employed by larger companies.

Membership of a professional body allows for training needs to be met and for professional goals to be achieved for contractors.

Growing trust

You know how good you are at what you do, and you know the quality of your work. However, having independently verified proof that your work is compliant and to the very highest standards is hugely beneficial when it comes to growing trust and your reputation.

This sign of professional commitment demonstrates to your clients that they are working with someone who prioritizes the quality of the business and service, and having a reputation as a trustworthy contractor is priceless to your business.

Whether you are considering becoming an accredited contractor in your field or if you’ve taken the plunge already, there are obvious benefits to undergoing the accreditation process, building trust and reassurance with your clients, and cementing your reputation as a leader in your field.

Are you a member of a professional body? Has it brought significant benefits to how you conduct your business? Or are you not convinced of their professional benefit?
