With the COVID-19 lockdown gradually beginning to ease, we're slowly but surely creeping towards the new normal and contractors and freelancers are either returning to work or making plans to. This makes it the perfect time to update your listening material in order to find shows that are informative, inspiring and motivational. With that in mind, the team at Kingsbridge has picked out some of their favourite podcasts that should be added to contractors' libraries.

So, whether you're on your way to your client's COVID-secure workplace, working from home, updating your CV, or just off out for a run, you'll not be short of listening material to keep you informed and entertained.

Self-Employed Happy Hour

The Self-Employed Happy Hour comes with the rather excellent tagline: "any hour can be happy hour when you're self-employed." The podcast sees self-employment author and coach Peri Pakroo chat with guests about working for themselves. The stories highlighted each week are varied, with contractors, freelancers and business owners of all descriptions discussing their experiences.

Radio 4 Money Box

While not specifically about self-employment, Radio 4 Money Box regularly deals with topics pertinent to PSCs and freelancers. For instance, one recent episode talks to young entrepreneurs who have started businesses during lockdown, while another discusses the extension to SEISS. Essential listening for anyone who works for themselves.

 Being Freelance

Being Freelance, hosted by Steve Folland, is a regularly updated podcast that offers tips and advice to freelancers by giving others a platform to share their experiences. While aimed at freelancers rather than contractors with their own limited companies, much of the advice transcends those divides, such as a recent episode finding clients, or another on building a business on reputation

 Freelance Mum

Freelance Mum is an excellent resource for women juggling self-employment and childcare. Faye Dicker and Laura Rawlings host short-but-sweet episodes where they speak to inspiring freelancers, contractors and business owners about their stories and offer tips and advice on everything from bookkeeping to making your website look great.

Letters From A Hopeful Creative

As the title suggests, Letters From A Hopeful Creative is aimed by and large at creatives. However, much of the advice can be adapted to suit many small businesses, including PSCs. Each episode, Sara Tasker and Jen Carrington answer a letter from a creative looking for guidance and support, in their capacity as business owners and creative coaches. The advice is inspirational and encouraging, perfect for when you feel as if you need a little push.

FT UK Politics

The FT UK Politics podcast is another that isn't strictly a self-employed podcast. But, as an SME, it's vital that you stay abreast of the decisions being taken in government that directly affect you and your income. Presented by Sebastian Payne, this weekly podcast provides discussion and analysis of the latest political news (spoiler alert: a lot of recent episodes are about coronavirus) from the FT's various commentators and correspondents.

What the IR35?!

We may be blowing our own trumpet just a little with this one, but What the IR35?! is a great resource for limited company contractors to get to grips with the trickier aspects of the notorious off-payroll legislation without having to seek out professional consultation. Kingsbridges' MD Thomas Wynne and Legal Manager Nicola Hayman give the latest lowdown on IR35 with help from experts in the field. Subscribe now to make sure you don't miss an episode!
