With local lockdowns popping up around the UK, and quarantine restrictions changing at short notice as governments try to prevent a second wave of COVID-19, many of us are choosing a staycation this summer.

While some corners of the British press would have you believe a staycation is a holiday in the UK, it’s not. A staycation is where you take a week or two off work and chill out at home, perhaps going on the odd day trip, but generally just enjoying some family time. And with the weather being as glorious as it is at the moment, why wouldn’t you spend your staycation in your own back garden? To help you do just that, we’ve put together some our favourite things to turn the garden into the ultimate holiday destination.

Sun loungers

If you only get one thing for your staycation garden, make it a set of sun loungers. They give you a comfortable place to sit or recline in the sun, and they fold down neatly so they’re easy to store in the shed when not in use.

Al fresco dining furniture

A good set of table and chairs is a must for any garden, ideally one that can accommodate a nice big parasol to create a bit of shade. It’s perfect for sitting the family round and enjoying a meal together. Speaking of which…

BBQ

An absolute summer garden essential, a good BBQ is a great investment, allowing you to cook a fabulous feast for the family. We’ll leave the gas versus charcoal debate up to you, but if you do opt for charcoal, we recommend investing in a chimney starter as well to get it going without dangerous amounts of lighter fluid.

Hot tub

If you have the budget, a hot tub is great for a bit of at-home pampering. You can even get inflatable ones now if you don’t quite have the space for a permanent structure. Spend some time relaxing in the sun or, as the evening creeps in, unwind with a glass of wine.

Paddling pool

If you have kids, a paddling pool can keep them entertained for hours, as well as helping to keep them cool in hot weather. There are lots of choices available, from the basic inflatable circles, to family-sized ones that accommodate adults as well, and even full-on inflatable water play centres that include built-in slides.

Trampoline

Speaking of keeping the kids entertained for hours, a trampoline is the way to go if you have the space. Your youngsters will have fun, get exercise, and tire themselves out nicely for bedtime so you can enjoy some evening peace and quiet.

So, if you’re one of the many not going on a traditional summer holiday this year, don’t let it get you down. Instead, think of all the fun things you can do from the comfort of your own back garden.
